Pelvic pain & bleeding

Endometriosis & adenomyosis

Tissue similar to the womb lining growing outside the womb (endometriosis) or within the womb muscle (adenomyosis). Common, benign and treatable.

Understanding

Endometriosis & adenomyosis.

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside the uterus, most commonly on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, pelvic side walls, bowel and bladder. Adenomyosis is closely related: the same tissue grows inside the muscle of the womb itself.

Both are common, benign and not contagious. They often run alongside one another. Symptoms can vary widely, and many patients live with them for years before a diagnosis is made. Modern treatment is highly effective, and with the right plan, most patients see a real, measurable improvement.

Common symptoms

What to look out for.

  • Painful periods or pelvic pain

  • Pain during or after sex

  • Painful bowel movements or urination during periods

  • Fatigue, low energy

  • Difficulty getting pregnant

Diagnosis

How it's investigated.

Approach

A structured workup, often within one appointment, to identify the cause and shape a clear treatment plan.

  • Pelvic examination

  • Transvaginal pelvic ultrasound

  • MRI scan when indicated

  • Diagnostic laparoscopy in selected cases, both to confirm and treat

Treatment

Tailored to your priorities.

Treatment is built around your symptoms, preferences and any other conditions. Options often combine medication, hormonal treatments and where appropriate, surgery.

  • Pain relief: paracetamol and anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen, naproxen)

  • Hormonal options: the combined pill, mini-pill, depot injection, implant, Mirena coil and GnRH treatments

  • Laparoscopic excision surgery to remove visible deposits: the gold standard for long-term symptom control

  • Fertility-focused management where appropriate

  • Hysterectomy considered in selected cases
