Ovaries

Ovarian cysts

Fluid-filled sacs that develop on the ovaries. Most are harmless and resolve on their own, but some need closer review.

Understanding

Ovarian cysts.

Ovarian cysts are extremely common, particularly in women of reproductive age. Most are simple, fluid-filled and resolve without any treatment. Many are discovered by chance during a scan done for another reason.

The plan is shaped by the cyst’s size, appearance on ultrasound and any symptoms. Mr Orabi will discuss whether a watch-and-wait approach is right, whether further imaging is needed, or whether a small keyhole operation makes sense.

Common symptoms

What to look out for.

  • Pelvic pain or pressure

  • Bloating or fullness

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Often no symptoms at all; many cysts are found incidentally on a scan

Diagnosis

How it's investigated.

Approach

A structured workup, often within one appointment, to identify the cause and shape a clear treatment plan.

  • Pelvic examination

  • Transvaginal pelvic ultrasound

  • Blood tests including CA-125 where indicated

  • MRI scan in selected cases

Treatment

Tailored to your priorities.

Treatment is built around your symptoms, preferences and any other conditions. Options often combine medication, hormonal treatments and where appropriate, surgery.

  • Observation with repeat scans for simple cysts

  • Hormonal treatment to prevent new cysts forming

  • Laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy where surgery is needed

  • Referral on the cancer pathway if scan features are concerning
